Stripe Rust Update, April 20, 2007

Posted by joshua.a.johnson | January 7, 2016

Hello, everyone:

When we were driving back from Mt. Vernon after planting spring nurseries on April 20, we checked winter wheat fields along HW 26. We found one leaf with stripe rust pustules starting sporulation in a field between the intersection of HW 26 and HW 395 and Washtucna. Even though we only found one infected leaf, it shows that stripe rust starts developing in central Washington. In one to two weeks, stripe rust should be commonly found in susceptible wheat fields in central Washington.

When we took stripe rust notes for our winter crop nurseries on April 18 and 19 in Mt. Vernon, both wheat and barley stripe rusts were up to 60% severity on susceptible entries. Susceptible barley had up to 40% leaf rust, but no leaf rust was found on wheat entries.
